Maya Farming

Why was farming important to the Maya?

The Maya excelled at farming, using the stars and weather to create detailed calandars which helped them to understand when to plant and harvest their crops. They made the most out of the land available, using raised fields to allow them to farm in wetlands, terrace farming to maximise space in mountain areas, and slash and burn or ‘shifting’ to clear jungle areas to make way for crops.

These farming methods are still used in many parts of the world today!
